I recently made a comment on an article about infidelity on a news site. I said that my husband had cheated on me and how devastating it is for myself and potentially for my children. Someone actually had the nerve to tell me that there are two sides to every story. Two sides to every story? Unless one of those sides involves my husband being hypnotized which forced him to slip his dick into another woman, I don't want to hear that trite excuse. There are a few things that you take for granted in life. One is if you show up at work, you will get paid. Another is if you're married, you will not have to be tested for STDs. I don't think that's an unrealistic expectation to have of marriage. I wasn't looking for guaranteed happiness. I was just looking to not have to pee in a cup and worry about having HIV or chlamydia.
There are two sides to every story. Two sides to every argument. But when the story is your husband slept with another woman while he was married to you, the only story IS that your husband slept with another woman while he was married to you. That's the only story that matters. Anything else is just bullshit.
Let's say that you walk into a store and you see something that you want. You don't have enough money for it so you put it in your pocket and you walk out the door. Is there a second side to that story? Maybe you really wanted what you took. Maybe the cashier gave you a dirty look when you walked in and you took the item for payback. Is that a second side to this story? No, there's only one side to this story. What you did was wrong and there's no excuse.
You can not live without breathing. You can not live without eating and drinking. You can live without sex, especially for a finite amount of time. The amount of time needed to walk away honorably from your spouse and get a goddamn divorce. There is no other side to the story of cheating. No side that says that you need to have sex in order to go on. I don't accept that bullshit at all. That's ridiculous. If you're married to somebody and you're not happy, then you need to just walk away from your marriage and don't slip your dick into another woman and claim there are two sides to every story.
It's even worse when family (his) says the same thing to you over the phone when you call them to get support just after you find out about his cheating. And then you never, ever hear from them again.

ReplyDeleteI think everyone is the Hero of the tale that they tell themselves. Many of your posts hint at the sort of subtle re-arranging your ex has done in his mind to paint you as the villain. The alternative tale would be that he purposefully wanted to inflict harm on you and the kids, and doesn't feel any remorse for doing it (sociopath?). They are excuses, but in his story they are probably classified in the "mitigating circumstances" or "flimsy justifications" file so his brain doesn't go haywire.
Deciding that you are celibate is a pretty big decision for a marriage, especially if you haven't talked it over with the husband (and even if you have...). Not sure what you meant when you said "finite", but our whole lives are "finite" so it could mean a lot of things.
If my wife decided she wanted to be celibate and she didn't tell me about it, I'd be upset too. Not because I can't go without sex but because it's supposed to be a team effort and well, wtf right? If she changed the foundation of the relationship without any input from me I still wouldn't cheat on her, but it's practically a guarantee that we'd get a divorce (maybe one of those "amicable" ones you mentioned?). A guy's options in that scenario are divorce, adultery, suicide or celibacy. Not a very good selection to choose from.

DeleteI have always said that everyone is a legend in their own mind and I'm no exception. I’m sure my husband isn’t either. I believe that he probably does have some remorse for what he did. In fact he texted me "he's sorry for destroying everything" but then he followed it up with "but I don't believe that you'll ever admit that you put conditions on our marriage that caused it to fail". And no, that condition was not celibacy. I don’t know what conditions he was referring to. Faithfulness, monogamy? I never once, NOT ONCE, said no to my husband about sex.I will repeat, in being with him for 18 years, it never happened. I grew up reading romance novels. I love sex. I'm just as kinky as the next person. When I said you can live without sex, I meant he could live without having sex with his girlfriend. If he fell so madly in love with her and wanted to be with her, be honest and tell your wife about it. I wouldn't have been happy, of course, but I can understand love. What I can't understand is inflicting pain and suffering on your family. And he willingly did that. You can say that you're swept away in the moment but the moment doesn't last 18 months. What does last 18 months is trying on a new life while you have your old life in a holding pattern. That doesn't compute for me.
If I had some inkling of what was going on, I would have recognized the signs that I’m now reading about. Pulling away from friends and family, the mid-life crisis motorcycle. Since I was in the dark and judging him by my own moral compass, I didn't have the luxury of doing research.

I think what she meant about going without sex for a 'finite' period of time was not about her and her husband, but with her husband and the OW. Or any man and any OW. In other words if you really need like you have to have sex with someone else, then you should wait until you are divorced.

DeleteI should offer that I don't agree with celibate marriages either. I like sex. Sex is awesome. If one spouse doesn't want to have sex and the other spouse does, then go to marriage counseling and try to rekindle that fire. If that doesn't work, then by all means separate.
You need to consider your children and consider your spouse that you have spent so many years with before you make such an irreversible decision as committing adultery. Don't just say boo hoo and go fuck someone else. If you don't use it, it's not going to fall off. Take the time to bow out gracefully and then go find that person that can light your fire.
Kay, there are many cliches out there re infidelity and other aspects of a marriage that, when really examined, are not necessarily true.
ReplyDeleteAmong others we hear : Each party is 50% responsible for the state of the marriage, the problems etc. But, think about it.
While it could very well be 50/50, there are myriad other ratios that may be accurate for a particular marriage.
You could be married to a NPD or BPD. You'd have almost no control over the devestation these folks bring to a marriage, even if you were perfect.
Same with the two sides deal. Yes, it is true that their are two different stories. But, clearly , one person's story may be more accurate than the other's.
The surprising thing is that people hearing these stories , often, fail to consider both the source and the source's motivation to tell the truth.
In the case of a cheater, folks seem to seldom factor in that the cheater, by definition, is dishonest and lacks integrity, or that the cheater is highly motivated to justify his/her actions by slanting things.
One would think that it would be obvious to folks. Here you have a person who lies, lacks empathy, hurts others, engages in immoral behavior, probably is a poor communcator and problem solver. Yet, people accept what the cheater says as truth without question, sometimes. It is mind boggling.
Nicely said. His side must be his version of the truth, people think. Well, if you're a liar and a cheater with no morals I'm not sure you're well acquainted with any version of truth.

you haven't eaten in a while, you don't have much money, you go into a shop and you steal a sandwich. The shopkeeper says 'that asshole stole a sandwich and has cost me money!!!' He/she would be correct that is exactly what happened. This also causes the person who the shopkeeper to feel emphatic.
However the shoplifter has various reasons for doing what he did possibly causing the person he's/she's talking to feel emphatic to him/her.
It seems to me that when it comes to this marriages are a lot worse... because there are so many complications at play... did he have problems with restraint? Did you make him feel unwanted? And many other things.
Saying that you shouldn't believe someone because they cheated on someone and therefore not to be trusted is an interesting point... but then a similar point could be made about the person who has been cheated on because they are very upset, probably not exactly feeling good feelings towards the person that they cheated on... Are you saying the majority of people could have unbiased opinion on the reasons behind why the person cheated? I'm not sure I'd be unbiased...
Did I make him feel unwanted? I'm sure I did. He was gone for a year and I had to make a life for my kids during that time. Is feeling unwanted justification for dating while you're married and lying every single weekend about where you're going? Looking your 6 year old in the eye and saying you're going to watch football and can't go to the movies with him and then go and see your secret lover? That's just fucking sick. I think he's a horrible selfish person and a neglectful father and he's not fit to even be in the same room as my children. But I know I'm biased. I have said that I take some responsibility for the unhappiness in my marriage but I don't accept the blame for him cheating. That's completely on him and the kids and I did not deserve that. And if you say that he just cheated on me and not the kids, I will say to refer to my statement above about disappearing every weekend on the kids. They knew Daddy was gone and didn't spend time with them and the sad thing is they came to expect and accept it. And in no world is that right.

ReplyDeleteSeriously, loving this post!! I don't have proof that my ex cheated but he certainly was going to the gym a ton and I'm sorry but what person spends 2 1/2+ hrs at the gym?? What really sucks is when you find out from clients that you are the one that cheated and had a boyfriend and that is why you left your husband. Really happened and still really pissed about this! I vote we chop their dicks off!!
