What Can You Do But Laugh

This morning I'm worried over my kidney stone and upcoming surgery. When will the surgery be? Will it be successful? I  go to the hospital to check in and the registration lady asks for my address and after I tell her, she says you must have just moved in. I said no,we've been there five years. 'I saw a moving truck there recently,' she said, 'I live right down the road. '

'Oh,' I said, 'my husband was moving out.'  'Moving out?'' she said with puzzlement. 'Yes, we are getting a divorce,' was my response.  I wanted to say have you heard of divorce? Apparently they happen every day. The look on her face was priceless. I think she wanted to be anywhere but in front of me at that point. Then she asks, 'Should I remove him as your emergency contact?' Yes, that's probably a good idea since I don't want to inconvenience him with a call about my ailing health if he's with his new 'lady' friend.

Afterwards my mom and I had to laugh. Really? You go to the hospital for surgery and you still have to answer questions about your painful divorce. Life is grand sometimes.

* Update - No surgery this week. My doctor and the OR are booked. I'm waiting to hear what day next week it will be scheduled for. So here I sit as I hurry up and wait; patience is a trait that has never come easily to me.

  1. I know it wasn't funny at the time but I'm sure the look on her face was just like a deer in the headlights. Who doesn't know what husband moving out means??? DUH
